Why You'll Love It

A RAY OF SUNSHINE FOR SENSITIVE SKIN

Our original broad spectrum mineral sunscreen for sensitive skin. This reef-friendly vegan formula delivers broad spectrum, blue light and infrared protection, warding off sun damage without the irritation.

Sensitive skin and SPF have not always got along. In fact, 50% of Pai customers* have reacted negatively to an SPF. Chemical sunscreens absorb into the skin to work, which can trigger the very inflammation you're trying to prevent. But going without sunscreen isn't a safe option either. Premature ageing, UV-driven oxidative stress, unprotected skin? That's a hard no from us. Our customers need a daily SPF they can trust, and that even the most reactive skin can tolerate.

Non-nano Zinc Oxide sits on the skin's surface, physically reflecting UV rays away rather than absorbing into it. No white cast, no blocked pores, no irritation. Cotton Callus Culture, a plant stem cell extract, helps skin recover from damage caused by UVB, UVA, infrared and visible light radiation. And Karanja Oil brings natural UV-absorbing flavonoids that boost the mineral filter's protection. The result is a fast-absorbing, non-greasy formula that sits beautifully under makeup and actually makes sun protection feel easy.

*Survey of 471 UK female respondents.

Directions

Apply two fingertip-sized amounts to your face each morning after moisturiser, but before makeup. It's fast-absorbing and non-greasy, so no hanging around waiting for it to sink in.

For best protection, apply 15 minutes before sun exposure and reapply throughout the day as needed. Your skin's doing its bit. This is yours.

Store in a cool, dark place to keep the formula at its best.

*Allow sunscreen to fully absorb before dressing to help minimise transfer onto clothing.

Recycling

Say no to landfill! Let's recycle everything! - Sarah

This one comes back to us. Cut the tube partway along the top, below the crimp, so you can rinse it out. Please don't cut it off completely. Leave the cap on and pop it in your Pai mailer to send back to us.

All Pai boxes, cartons, sleeves and inserts can be recycled with your household paper recycling.

The majority of your Pai packaging can be recycled at home, but some components need specialist recycling. We've partnered with a specialist programme to make this as easy as possible for our UK customers.

Keep your Pai mailer box (it can be flat packed for easy storage). Fill it with the packaging elements you can't recycle at home, and clearly label the box RECYCLING. Create your free returns label and drop it off at the post office.

Please note we are unable to accept glass or non-Pai packaging. Glass bottles can be separated and placed into your household recycling.

Key Ingredients

  • Zinc

Acting as a physical shield, this all-natural mineral filter protects against UVA and UVB light. We use non-nano Zinc Oxide in our sunscreen which means the particles aren't small enough to be absorbed or to interfere with ocean life.

  • Cotton Extract

Rich in Vitamin E, antioxidants and omega-3 fatty acids, this hardworking active helps protect skin from photo-ageing and damage caused by the sun's harmful rays.

Sarah Brown, Pai Founder

"It can feel like forever for summer to arrive in the UK and that’s how many of our customers felt about a sun lotion for sensitive skin from Pai. The list of ‘musts’ and ‘must-nots’ was extensive, so forgive us for the fact it took seven years to complete. We believe it was worth the wait."

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between mineral and chemical sunscreen, and why does Pai use mineral?

Chemical sunscreens absorb into the skin and convert UV rays into heat, which can trigger inflammation in reactive skin. Mineral sunscreens like British Summer Time use non-nano zinc oxide, which sits on the skin's surface and physically reflects UV away without being absorbed. In a survey of 471 Pai customers, 50% reported reacting negatively to an SPF in the past, so we chose a mineral filter that's inherently anti-inflammatory rather than potentially irritating.

Why is it SPF 30 and not SPF 50?

To meet COSMOS certification standards, we use non-nano mineral filters. At the concentrations needed for SPF 50, these can leave a chalky white cast. SPF 30 blocks approximately 97% of UV rays compared to SPF 50's 98%, so the real-world difference is minimal, and you get a formula you'll actually want to wear every day.

Will this leave a white cast on darker skin tones?

We have tested our SPF against other mineral sunscreens and found it did not leave a white cast on the skin. However, the results can vary from person to person. If it is not suitable, you can return it to us as per our 90 day returns policy.

Should SPF be applied before or after moisturiser?

Always apply British Summer Time after your moisturiser and before makeup. Mineral sunscreens work by sitting on the skin's surface to physically reflect UV rays, so layering anything on top can disrupt that protective barrier. Think of it as the last step in your skincare routine, first step in your defence.

How much SPF should I apply and how often should I reapply?

Apply two fingertip-sized amounts to your face each morning, at least 15 minutes before sun exposure. Reapply throughout the day as needed, particularly after sweating or towelling off.

Can I use this SPF without a moisturiser underneath?

We'd recommend applying a moisturiser first. British Summer Time contains conditioning ingredients like Jojoba Seed Oil, but it's formulated as sun protection, not a moisturiser, so it won't deliver enough hydration on its own.

Is the SPF water resistant?

No. You will need to reapply our SPF after any exposure to water.

I have acne-prone skin. Will this SPF be suitable?

Yes. The formula is non-comedogenic, so it won't clog pores. Coconut Alkanes and Jojoba Seed Oil keep the texture lightweight and fast-absorbing, while Bentonite (volcanic clay) helps reduce shine throughout the day.

I have rosacea. Will this SPF be suitable?

Yes. British Summer Time uses non-nano zinc oxide, a mineral filter that sits on the skin's surface and reflects UV away rather than absorbing into it like chemical filters do. This means it won't trigger the inflammation that makes conventional SPFs so problematic for rosacea-prone skin. The entire formula is 96H patch tested for tolerance, including on volunteers with reactive skin.

Is British Summer Time safe to use during pregnancy?

Yes, it's certified pregnancy safe. It does contain a small amount of Mandarin Peel Oil, so if you prefer to avoid essential oils during your first trimester, you could wait until your second trimester before introducing it.

What skincare products pair well with British Summer Time?

It layers beautifully over the Chamomile & Rosehip Calming Day Cream for a hydrating base, and pairs well with our Vitamin C Booster for added antioxidant defence against environmental damage. For a radiant finish, apply The Impossible Glow Bronzing Drops on top.

Does this sunscreen protect against blue light and screen damage?

Yes. Cotton Callus Culture, derived from cultured cotton plant stem cells, helps protect against and repair damage caused by visible light (including blue light from screens) and infrared radiation. These types of light generate reactive oxygen species that contribute to collagen degradation and premature ageing, and most sunscreens don't address them at all.

What certifications does British Summer Time have?

It's certified COSMOS Natural and Organic, vegan, and cruelty-free under the Leaping Bunny programme. The formula is also dermatologist tested, non-comedogenic, and 96H patch tested for tolerance on volunteers with reactive skin. Pai is a certified B Corp.

Is British Summer Time reef-safe?

Yes. The non-nano zinc oxide particles are larger than 100nm, which means they're too large to be absorbed by marine organisms. Unlike chemical filters such as oxybenzone and octinoxate (banned in Hawaii due to coral bleaching), non-nano zinc oxide doesn't harm coral reefs.

What makes British Summer Time different from other mineral sunscreens?

Most mineral sunscreens rely on a single UV filter and stop there. British Summer Time uses three layers of protection: non-nano zinc oxide to physically reflect UVA and UVB rays, Cotton Callus Culture (a plant stem cell extract) to help skin recover from blue light and infrared damage, and Karanja Oil, whose natural flavonoids (pongamol and karanjin) absorb UV wavelengths and boost the mineral filter's performance. Lab testing by sun protection specialists Hélioscience measured an in vivo SPF of approximately 20 for Karanja Oil alone.

A great travel friendly spf/summer cream

"This mini-size summer cream was the perfect product to take with me while traveling during the holidays. Just one pump dispenses plenty of product, and the texture is the ideal balance between a face cream and a sunscreen. For next summer, I would love it to have a stronger SPF (around 50) for even better protection."

Diana C. (4/5)

Great product - just not for my skin.

"I love Pai's product because they are great for my skin. I have Perioral Dermatitis which also means sensitive and unpredictable skin. I mostly have issues during the winter time, but some sunscreens also makes my skin react and therefore, I wanted to try this sunscreen. Unfortunately my skin is not happy with this one - but I think that it is a great sunscreen for most. The lower rating is only due to the fact that I can't use it for my skin, but it's not a bad product at all."

Susanne H. (3/5)

Lovely lightweight SPF to layer

"Lovely lightweight SPF to layer over The Anthemis moisturiser. Not greasy and leaves a subtle sheen . Works well as a primer when used under powder mineral foundation. Unobtrusive scent and hasn’t caused any blemishes. Only used on my face and neck so can’t comment on efficacy when used on the body but very pleased anyway and will carry on using."

angela d. (5/5)

Mariska G. (5/5)

Constantly good SPF coverage

"This is the first facial SPF I’ve used that provides good cover without loads of shine or any breakout or reaction. There is a hint of white caste which reduces with application and absorption. Wouldn’t be without this product now. Please Pai make a version for the body."

Q&A

Hello! What is this sunscreen’s exact zinc oxide concentration/percentage?
Hi Rubia, The percentage of Zinc Oxide in our British Summer Time SPF is 21%. Pai Customer Experience Team
Hi! Is this officially broad spectrum? P+++ or P++++?
Hi Camilla! We don't use the PA+ rating system. We use the EU display system with a circled UVA symbol. This indicates that the UVA protection is at least a third of the SPF rating and the product offers broad-spectrum protection to comply with the EU legislation. We hope this helps! Pai Customer Experience Team
Hello, I was wondering if this SPF is suitable for people with eczema and suitable to use if you are having an eczema flare up? (specifically around the face and/or neck). I am having a flare up at the moment and have really scaled back the products I am using due to sensitivity - including my current SPF (not a Pai product) as it stings my face when I put it on, however I would still like to have daily sun protection as it's very important to me. Thank you!
Hi Zoe! Our British Summer Time SPF has been independently patch-tested to ensure suitability for sensitive and Eczema-prone skin. It shouldn't cause any irritation but we also offer a [90 Day Returns](https://www.paiskincare.live/pages/90-day-returns) policy if you were to find it's not suitable. Pai Customer Experience Team
Why are there essential oils in this sunscreen? Have you considered making a version without the essential oils for extra sensitive skin? Thanks
Hi Elgra, Thank you for getting in touch. We do have British Summer Time Glow SPF 30 which is essential oil free. Any essential oils used in British Summer Time SPF 30 are used in a very small amount and are suitable for sensitive skin. I hope this is helpful. Customer Experience Team Member
Can you tell me why this isn’t a SPF 50?
Hi Angela, We have not yet formulated an SPF 50 however we will add this product request to our list which we review regularly and hopefully we can implement this in the future. Pai Customer Experience Team
