Do I need an eye cream?

At Pai, we tend to err on the side of simplicity. Unless we're talking about our coffee orders. So our response can vary when customers ask about adding additional steps to their routine.

One of the most common questions we receive is "Do I need an eye cream?" If you're seeing fine lines, dealing with chronic dryness, or finding that your regular moisturiser is too heavy for the delicate eye area, then yes. An eye cream built for this uniquely vulnerable skin can make a real difference.

The facts about your eye area

The skin that surrounds your eyes is up to ten times thinner than the rest of your face, and it doesn't contain any sebaceous (oil) glands. This means it's more prone to dehydration, fine lines, and irritation from products that work perfectly well everywhere else.

Using an eye cream rich in nourishing and anti-inflammatory ingredients can help hydrate and support this delicate area. Echium seed oil, for instance, contains stearidonic acid (SDA) with anti-inflammatory properties to help settle stressed-out skin. The omega-3 (gamma linolenic acid) and omega-6 (stearidonic acid) fatty acids in echium help cells regenerate, while anti-inflammatory and plumping properties make it ideal for smoothing out the skin.

Why Feather Canyon works differently

Our Feather Canyon Eye Cream centres on echium seed oil, one of the world's richest plant sources of omegas 3, 6 and 9. But what makes it special for the eye area: clinical studies showed echium oil decreased mean wrinkle depth by an average of 30.63% after 28 days of topical application.

The echium works by increasing levels of fibrillin-1, pro-collagen-1 and decorin, which are integral to providing the skin with strength and support. These proteins help keep skin firm and smooth. When you lose them, you see fine lines. When you rebuild them, those lines soften.

Crucially for the sensitive eye area, Feather Canyon is fragrance-free and contains no essential oils. If you've ever experienced itchy, stinging or watering eyes from other eye creams, you'll understand why this matters.

How to apply for best results

Eye cream is one of the most over-applied products, so remember: less is more. Applying too much to this sensitive region can cause puffiness and milia (those little white bumps that won't budge).

For best results, apply half a pump to both eyes in the morning after spritzing your tonic, then follow with a face cream on the rest of your face.

Dot the cream along the top of your cheekbones and allow the eye area to draw the cream upwards, absorbing exactly the right amount. For an extra treat, lightly massage the cream into the skin by tracing around the orbital bone (the bony area that circles your eye) with your ring finger. It applies the gentlest pressure.

If you have the odd patch of eczema or dry skin around the eye area, Feather Canyon is ideal. The stearidonic acid in echium has the ability to inhibit cyclooxygenase activity and thereby block the conversion of arachidonic acid to PGE2, one of the inflammatory mediators that makes eczema flare. Simply apply a thin layer to the affected area.

Beyond the cream

Whether you're using eye cream or not, we'd always recommend wearing sunglasses, a hat, and SPF when in direct sunlight. UV exposure breaks down collagen faster than anything else, and squinting accelerates crow's feet formation. Our British Summer Time is gentle enough for the eye area when applied carefully.

The verdict? If your regular moisturiser is keeping your eye area happy, carry on. But if you're seeing changes you'd rather not, or if the skin around your eyes feels different from the rest of your face, a targeted eye cream with proven actives can help. Just make sure it's one that respects how delicate this area truly is.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I really need a separate eye cream, or can I just use my regular moisturiser?

If your moisturiser is keeping your eye area hydrated and comfortable, you don't need to change anything. But if you're noticing fine lines, chronic dryness, or irritation around the eyes, a dedicated eye cream makes sense because the skin there is up to ten times thinner than the rest of your face and lacks its own oil glands, so it has very different needs.

What makes echium seed oil so effective for the eye area?

Echium seed oil is one of the richest plant sources of omega-3, -6 and -9 fatty acids, which stimulate the production of three structural proteins: fibrillin-1, pro-collagen-1 and decorin. In a clinical study, topical echium oil reduced mean wrinkle depth by 30.63% after just 28 days. It also contains stearidonic acid (SDA), which interrupts the inflammatory cascade by blocking the conversion of arachidonic acid to PGE2, making it both a structural repair and anti-inflammatory ingredient.

How much eye cream should I apply, and what's the best technique?

Less is more. Use half a pump for both eyes, dotting the cream along the top of your cheekbones so the eye area draws the product upwards and absorbs only what it needs. Pat it in gently with your ring finger, tracing around the orbital bone. Over-applying can cause puffiness and milia, so resist the temptation to add more.

Is Feather Canyon Eye Cream safe for sensitive or eczema-prone skin around the eyes?

Yes. Feather Canyon is formulated without fragrance and essential oils, which are the two most common triggers for periorbital irritation. The echium seed oil's stearidonic acid actively inhibits the PGE2 inflammatory pathway involved in eczema flares, so it can be applied as a thin layer to dry or eczema-affected patches around the eyes.

What else can I do to protect the skin around my eyes from ageing?

UV exposure is the biggest driver of collagen breakdown around the eyes, and squinting accelerates crow's feet formation. Wearing sunglasses, a hat, and SPF in direct sunlight makes a significant difference. Pai's British Summer Time SPF is gentle enough for the eye area when applied carefully.
