Why is your skin suddenly acting up?
If you have sensitive skin, you know the frustration. One day your skin is calm and happy. The next, it's red, itchy, or breaking out. And half the time you've got no idea what triggered it.
The challenge is that what sets off your skin might leave someone else's completely unfazed. It's personal, which makes detective work essential. But there are some usual suspects worth investigating first.
Diet: your skin's report card
Your skin reflects what's happening inside your body. Eat something it doesn't like, and it'll let you know about it through breakouts, redness, or flare-ups.
The obvious culprits are dairy, eggs, and nuts. But the list goes on. Fermented foods like kimchi and kombucha? Packed with histamine, which can trigger eczema, hives, and psoriasis in sensitive types. Even healthy foods can be triggers if your body doesn't agree with them.
A food diary is your best detective tool here. Track what you eat and how your skin responds over a few weeks. Patterns will emerge.
Stress: the invisible trigger
When you're stressed or exhausted, your skin knows it. Stress hormones like cortisol disrupt your skin barrier function, slowing down cell turnover and weakening your natural defences. Result? A compromised barrier that lets irritants in and moisture out.
The solution goes beyond simply reducing stress. It's about finding stress management that actually works for you. Maybe that's ten minutes of meditation, maybe it's a boxing class, maybe it's turning your phone off at 9pm. Whatever helps your cortisol levels drop, your skin will thank you for it.
Hormones: the monthly rollercoaster
Most women know this one intimately. The week before your period, your skin becomes more reactive and prone to breakouts. Breakouts appear, sensitivity increases, and products that normally work fine suddenly sting.
Vitamin B6 can help regulate these hormonal swings when taken consistently. But hormones can be thrown off by other factors too: the pill, stress, thyroid issues, PCOS. If your skin problems follow a pattern that doesn't match your cycle, it's worth discussing with your GP.
Weather and environment: the daily assault
Winter's double whammy of freezing air outside and central heating inside strips moisture from your skin rapidly. Summer brings its own challenges: UV damage, sweat, and increased oil production.
Then there's pollution. Living in a city means your skin faces a daily barrage of particulate matter that can penetrate pores and accelerate ageing. The solution? Adjust your routine seasonally. Richer formulas in winter, lighter textures in summer. And always, always cleanse properly at night.
Ingredients: the hidden irritants
Here's where reading labels becomes essential. Common irritants hide in the most innocent-looking products. Retinol and glycolic acid are known troublemakers for sensitive skin, but your personal triggers might be completely different.
Fragrance is a big one. Listed as "parfum" on ingredients lists, it can contain dozens of undisclosed compounds. Even "natural" fragrances from essential oils can irritate. Then there are preservatives, surfactants, and actives that work brilliantly for some but cause havoc for others.
This is where a skin diary becomes invaluable. Note down every product you use and how your skin responds. After a few weeks, you'll start spotting patterns. Here's how to keep one effectively.
Finding your triggers (and your solutions)
Working out what sets your skin off takes patience and detective work. But once you know your triggers, you can start avoiding them. And when you can't avoid them (stress isn't exactly optional), you can at least prepare your skin with the right support.
